About the Chris Potter Discography Project

...

Ramsey and Chris at the Blue Whale in the Fall of 2012

The Chris Potter Discography Project has been a huge undertaking and labor of love, but also very rewarding. I came up with the idea when I was an undergraduate at the University of North Texas (UNT) about five years ago in 2010. By that time I had been absolutely thrilled by Chris' playing for a few years, and felt ready to begin transcribing a solo or two, but I wasn't aware of many recordings featuring him soloing on standards. Luckily, however, I was working in the Music Library at UNT, which is home to one of the largest collections of recorded music in the United States. I soon found myself researching, and within about a year I had a fairly complete list (or so I thought) of Chris' sideman work.

Slowly word got around about my mini-discography, and I realized this was information that many others might be interested in checking out. I decided to put it online, but couldn't find an easy way to do it, so I started learning HTML, CSS, and other web-development languages and was able to publish my first version of the discography in the summer of 2011

Within a few months I had begun receiving emails from people around the world. Some of these people were even close to Chris himself. Many pointed me to recordings that I didn't find in my own research and now there is a small group of people who that even keep me abreast of European releases that I'm less likely to come across. It has been a great experience and led me down multiple paths I never expected to see, and because of this discography, web-development is now part of my Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at the University of Southern California.

Help me find errors and keep the site up-to-date!

This is huge project, and sometimes I either don't have correct information, or mistyped it. So please, PLEASE, CONTACT me if you spot anything that seems to be amiss, or even if you just want to say "Hi!" People view this discography everyday but I only hear from a small handful of you, and I'd like that to change!

Advertising and Donations

As I said above, this is a huge project to which I have dedicated enormous amounts of time. I've put hundreds upon hundreds of hours over the course of the last few years into researching albums, recording dates and release dates, personnel, as well as web-development languages to ensure that the discography works across multiple browsers (including mobile) and is pleasing to look at. I've done this all voluntarily and happily, and plan to continue doing so for the foreseeable future. However, in May 2015 I decided to add a PayPal Donate button...
... incase anyone appreciates the work enough to want to help me fulfill my dream of owning a physical copy of each of these albums!

Thanks again for visiting, and if you have any questions or comments to hesitate to contact me!
